NEW WORKSHOP FOR 2017 – Styling with Botanicals

  • 6 March 2017, 5 June 2017, 11 September 2017 and 4 December 2017
  • Time: 10.00 am to 1.30 pm
  • Location: Lewes
  • Cost: £85 per workshop

This is a seasonal workshop close to my heart, and will differ from my usual workshops, as the focus will be purely on botanicals, foraged flowers, hedgerow plants and seed heads, making them accessible to all.  To begin the workshop, we will run through some basic photography and editing, before working with flowers, plants and seed heads from the gardens of A.S Apothecary, styling beautiful photos using just the flowers and then with some lovely props.  I will share my secrets on composition, give guidelines and tips to help you feel more confident about your photographs.  Later, we will go on to create a seasonal arrangement each, which we will use to create some still-life scenes.  The arrangement will be yours to take home with you when you leave.  If there is time at the end we will finish with a Q and A on social media. or anything else that you would like to ask.

Testimonials:

Anna, Quince

“I found it very beneficial to learn from you. You explained everything so beautifully with your visual images which really helped me to understand the art of styling and photography – something you make look so simple but is actually not that easy! I think your workshops are invaluable for florists to help us best portray our images – flowers are so beautiful but it is easy to get it wrong and your teaching and tips helped enormously.”

Juliet, Red Eden & Olive

“I can honestly say that I loved yesterdays workshop. It was completely the right balance between theory, demonstrations and hands on give it a go! I found it so inspiring and learnt so so much from it. I am looking forward to putting your tips and advice into practice and hopefully producing a much improved Instagram feed. The time went so quickly. Thanks again.. I loved it!”

Lynne

“I thoroughly enjoyed the morning spent with you. Time flew. You imparted much valuable knowledge and experience, in a very short while, and in such a serene, modest, generous and professional manner, that is really refreshing.

I loved the venue too. And the cake, of course!”

Louisa, Sugden & Daughters

“Attending Emma’s ‘styling for social media’ workshop was the best thing I have done this year. Running my own business is full-on and taking time out to learn and reflect on the way I approach things is invaluable.

Emma is relaxed and her calm methodical approach allows the workshop to run smoothly and efficiently. She offers plenty of good advice on styling and how to take the best photographs for social media. During the day there is ample of opportunity for hands on practice and with limited delegate numbers everyone gets individual attention and guidance. The workshop was held in the most wonderful location, a small vintage style florists in Brighton with oodles of charm and fabulous props to utilise.

I left the workshop feeling confident and focused and ready to implement a new social media strategy. Since attending the workshop I have seen my Instagram followers increase, each post has greater interaction and my business has benefited from increased sales.

I can’t recommend this workshop highly enough; fun, beneficial and inspiring.”

Laura Hoy, Essential Oils and You:

“Yesterday, in the early evening when the light was still good, I spent just under an hour playing around with props to make some images for my blog, snipping roses from my balcony, swirling face creams, and generally enjoying myself and the whole creative process.  I posted some of the images on my various social media accounts, and this morning they were filled with compliments about the beauty of the images.

This is a very different look to my picture making process before attending Emma’s ‘styling workshop’, I felt frustrated and unhappy with what I was putting together, and most of the images, apart from some I’d borrowed from friends did not reflect the quality of what I was presenting.

Emma’s 4 hour workshop completely turned this around, within the first few minutes I felt much more confident about creating an image I would be happy with, but I got a lot more out of it than just making a suitable image for my blog. I’d just started to use instagram and with Emmas tips and experience I have developed my style, confidence and skill, it’s now my favourite social media platform and as well as building connections I’m having a lot of fun with it.

I’m amazed at the developments I’ve already made and am looking forward to her next workshop.”

  2. Hi!

Your designs are so… Pleasing? Fitting? Beautiful.

A link to your Theory of Place blog?

    Please.

    Thank you!

  3. I found you on a random glance at Instagram search and just love your photography. What kind of camera do you use and do you use extra lighting? Your images are just lovely! I am trying to learn new techniques (spoiled by iphone and apps for instagram and have lost touch with camera talent!) I was recently asked to do photography for a book on marriage and feel completely stumped. Thanks! Any input will be helpful

    1. Hi Deborah. I use a canon for blog photos but just my iphone mainly on instagram. I only use natural light. For editing I use Photoshop, but I only do the bare minimum, I am trying to get my photography to a level where I don’t really need to edit it if at all possible. Good luck. Emma

  4. Hi Emma,
I am a 29 year old girl based in London, who just finished her masters in Fashion and Design. One of the things that these studies have helped me to reveal is that I am truly passionate about not only fashion and magazines (Cereal, Kinfolk, Openhouse), but the more lifestyle and independant publications too. All things beautiful really! Photography and putting things together (whether it is a physical collage or a paper one) is something I would dare to say I’m obsessed with.

I very recently came over your blog and not only have I absolutely loved you and the things you do, but think I share a very similar aesthetic.

I have seen you carry out some workshops and was wondering if I could book a place for the “Basic styling, composition and photography for visual media”? I am currently doing an internship until the beginning of October, so wouldn’t be able to attend until then. Are you not doing one of these mid/late October? If not, the following one I could do would be the one taking place on the 1st of November, but since my work circumstances are a little uncertain at the moment, could I book now and confirm to you further on?

I would really love to do the workshop, as I think it really fits into what I am currently doing and would like to achieve as a career itself! My parents also met in Brighton and it would be so special for me.

Please do let me know and we can take it from there.

Thanks so much for now and really looking forward to meeting you.

    Karen X

  5. Dear Emma

I would be interested in finding out dates for any forthcoming workshops. I would also be interested in the availability and cost of one to one workshops.

I am setting up a business, and need help to develop my photography skills for use in social media.

    Thank you !

    Best wishes,

    Hester

  6. Hi Emma, please could you email me the dates and details of your next Styling and Visual Media for Florists workshop. I am in the process of starting my own florist business (after training ten years ago) and recently spent a few days arranging and photographing flowers for my new website (which I am putting together myself, from a template). Attempting to start a business with a budget of zero is a challenge, to say the least, but by necessity all of the photos where taken on my husband’s phone. Frustratingly, the results were largely ‘flat’ and disappointing, not reflecting the true beauty of the flowers or the time, effort and passion which had gone into the displays. I know nothing about photography and find photo editing baffling! How do the florists I follow on Instagram take such beautiful images from their iPhones, when my own iPhone seems to take a stunning bouquet and turn it into an apologetically plain one? I need your help!

    Many thanks
    Louisa x
